12 high-ranking officials face criminal sanctions for corruption

According to the Government Inspectorate’s report, some high-ranking officials were suspended from work after investigating their involvement in legal cases, including former Hanoi Mayor Nguyen Duc Chung and former Vice Chairman of HCM City Tran Vinh Tuyen.

The authorities also disciplined 56 officials, handled 64 officials for criminal violation of norms and standards and recovered nearly VND23 billion related to the violations.

In addition, government agencies at all levels have rotated working positions of tens of thousands of officials, civil servants and public employees to prevent corruption (an increase of 34% compared to 2019). So far this year, three officials handed in gifts worth VND31.8 million.

Regarding asset declaration by officials, this task has been completed for key Party officials.

Regarding inspection results and settlement of complaints and denunciations, thousands of organizations, groups, individuals have been administratively fined. As many as 124 cases with 118 people have been transferred to criminal investigation agencies for investigation. Particularly, the Government Inspectorate transferred 14 cases to the police.

Through the settlement of complaints and denunciations, the state administrative agencies at all levels have proposed to punish 541 people (386 people have been punished), to transfer 12 cases with 13 people to the investigation agency.

The State Audit of Vietnam transferred four cases with criminal signs to the police; reported two cases to the Prime Minister for instructing the Ministry of Public Security to investigate; and provided 101 audit reports and related documents as required by the authorities to serve investigation, inspection, supervision and prosecution procedures.

So far this year, 81 leaders of stage agencies have been found to be irresponsible, facilitating corruption in their organizations. As many as 62 of them have been sanctioned (up 66.1% compared to 2019), including 12 officials handled for crimes.

The new feature in the report is anti-corruption work within non-state enterprises and organizations. The authorities imposed VND25.56 billion of administrative fines from organizations and individuals of the non-state sector.

The police have investigated 508 corruption cases, with 1,186 defendants, including 286 new cases with 606 defendants (up by 15 cases and 58 defendants over the same period in 2019).

The Ministry of Defense has investigated and handled four corruption cases with the total violations amounting to VND27.7 billion. According to the Government Inspectorate, military-related corruption cases have been promptly detected and strictly handled.

“Anti-corruption work has been maintained and strengthened, strongly affirming the determination to fight corruption with the spirit of ‘without forbidden zones, without exceptions’,” stressed the Government Inspector General.

Vietnam ready for 13th Party Congress

Vietnam has made an impression on the international community as a safe country with great economic potential, and its success in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic and maintaining economic growth has been miraculous, a Japanese expert has said.

Addressing the event, Head of the Party Central Commission for External Relations Hoang Binh Quan stressed the significance of the 13th National Party Congress in the development of the Party and the country. The Party Central Committee, Politburo and Secretariat are strictly supervising all the preparations for the event.

The political report submitted to the upcoming Congress sets out the overall objectives, which are: to enhance the Party’s leadership, ruling capacity and combativeness; build a clean and strong Party and political system in all aspects; to consolidate people’s trust in the Party, State and the socialist system; to promote innovations, the willpower and aspirations for developments and the great all-nation unity strength, combined with the strength of the time; to push forward in a comprehensive and concerted manner the Doi Moi undertaking, national industrialisation and modernisation, rapid and sustainable development of the nation; to firmly defend the Homeland, maintain peace and stability; to strive for our country to become a socialist-oriented developed nation by mid-21st century.

Plenum completes preparation for Party Congress

The 15th plenum of the Party Central Committee wrapped up on January 17 after completing all the contents of its agenda.  

At the plenum, the last of the 12th tenure, the Committee discussed and passed the lists of first-time nominees and the special cases to the Committee of the coming 13th tenure, as well as that of the nominees to the key leading positions of the Party and the State, among others.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong stressed that the current Committee has weathered all the difficulties and completed the working agenda, leading the whole Party, people and army to very important achievements, leaving deep imprints and creating new trust and driving forces to bring the country into a new development period.

The leader asked the Committee members to continue bringing into play their sense of solidarity and responsibility in finishing the remaining work, and working as nucleuses so as to ensure the coming Congress a fine success that meets the expectation and hope of the whole Party and people./.

The communications work for the upcoming 13th National Party Congress has been prepared thoroughly and specifically, Le Manh Hung, Vice Chairman of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Information and Education, has said.

In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) on January 18, Hung, who is also director of the press centre for the 13th National Party Congress, said the communication work has been carried out through the media and at all-level agencies and localities, covering events after, during and before the congress.

The official highlighted the role played by press agencies in disseminating information about the congress, scheduled to take place from January 25 to February 2, as well as major achievements the country has recorded over the past time.

Regarding preparations for the press centre, Hung said they have been basically completed, adding the centre has outlined specific programmes and scenarios for journalists.

The centre has been equipped well in terms of technology, internet and equipment to serve domestic and foreign reporters.

Nearly 500 domestic reporters and technicians, and more than 60 resident correspondents, editors and technicians of foreign news agencies have registered to work at the press centre. More than 60 others will cover the congress online.

All reporters present at the centre will undergo COVID-19 testing, at the request of organisers.

According to Hung, the organisers invited foreign journalists to attend press conferences virtually due to the impact of the COVID-19.

Preparations underway for upcoming elections

HÀ NỘI — Joint efforts have been made to prepare for the upcoming elections, a meeting of the National Election Council (NEC) in Hà Nội on Monday was told.

It was reported at the second meeting of the NEC that the council has teamed up with the NA Standing Board, the Government and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee in the preparation work.

As of January 14, the issuance of documents regarding the elections of deputies to the 15th legislature, and all-level People’s Councils for the 2021-2026 tenure has been completed.

Efforts have been made to ensure security and safety for the elections, according to chief of the office of the NEC Nguyễn Hạnh Phúc. Meanwhile, election committees have been set up swiftly in localities.

The council agreed that an online national conference implementing the election work will take place on January 21.

NA Chairwoman Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân, also chair of the NEC, asked the council’s sub-committees and office to promptly completed documents and provide advice for the council in this regard. —
