HÀ NỘI — An art exhibition to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the establishment of Sơn Tây old fortress citadel will take place in Hà Nội’s Sơn Tây Town from November 9-23.

The exhibition, entitled Nắng Sơn Tây (Sơn Tây Sunshine), is jointly organised by the Culture, Information and Sports Centre and Fine Arts Club of Sơn Tây Town. It is part of the activities celebrating the establishment of the ancient citadel.

About 50 pieces by 40 artists from many provinces will be on display. They are diverse in content, style and materials like oil paint, lacquer, (poonah) paper or wood carving, but similar in expressing the artists’ affection for Vietnamese culture and heritage.

Many of the artworks have been created during the artists’ outdoor painting at the site of Sơn Tây Citadel, and take inspiration from the relic.

According to lacquer artisan Nguyễn Tấn Phát, a member of the organisation board, Nắng Sơn Tây is the largest and most quality art exhibition ever held in Sơn Tây Town.

“It is a tribute to the land of talented people and where the only laterite citadel remains intact in Việt Nam,” he said.

He added that the event shows the cohesion of artists and art workers in an effort to meet spiritual needs, while conveying many meaningful messages about the homeland, the country, and nature.

Sơn Tây old fortress citadel is chosen as the venue for the art event due to its original historical, cultural, architectural and also environmental values.

“Located to the west of Hà Nội, the relic is considered a ‘green lung’ of Sơn Tây Town,” he said.

According to historical documents, Sơn Tây Citadel was built in 1822 during the reign of Minh Mạnh Emperor (1791-1841). The citadel is built entirely of laterite, a material that meets the durable requirements of a defensive building and is available in the locality.

Many great events related to the Nguyễn Dynasty’s fights against French colonialism in Vietnamese history took place in the citadel, showing its critical significance in sheltering the plains and midlands of Tonkin and backing the Northwest border.

Due to its important cultural, historical and unique construction techniques, the Governor General of Indochina granted it with relic statues in 1924. It was recognised as a national historical relic by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) in 1994. — VNS

ĐÀ NẴNG — The central city of Đà Nẵng was ranked one of the most searched destinations by Indian tourists in terms of food, weather, shopping and historical site visits on the travel website Skyscanner – with a 1,141 per cent increase, the city’s tourism promotion centre said.

It said 71 per cent of search hits by Indian tourists focused on food, while 65 per cent queried weather in the beach hub in central Việt Nam.

The centre also said Đà Nẵng joined the top 10 search destinations on Skyscanner, a list including Krabi (Thailand), Mahe (Seychelles), Almaty (Kazakhstan), Baku (Azerbaijan) and Osaka (Japan).

About 38 per cent of searches targeted the opportunity of tasting local cuisine in Đà Nẵng when visiting the coastal destination in 2024.

Đà Nẵng has more than 100 restaurants serving from 100 to 300 guests at a given time, and 30 Indian food restaurants.

The city’s tourism department earlier hosted a promotion programme in New Delhi and Gurugram, India, and called on Air India, Vistara and IndiGo to launch more air routes between Đà Nẵng and India.

The department said 95,000 visitors from India had visited the city, accounting 50 per cent of total Indian tourists visiting Việt Nam in nine months of 2023.

Five-star Furama resort Đà Nẵng had already prepared for hosting MICE and weddings for Indian tourists, while low-cost carrier Vietjet Air resumed seven new international routes from Đà Nẵng to the five largest cities in India – New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Bangalore – in early 2022.

Indian travel companies including One Above, In Time, Tourister Vinnaayak Holidays, Kesari Travels, Jain&Jain, While Board and Plutus Voyage, also paid attention to favoured locations on the beach in Đà Nẵng.

Basheer Adul Rahim, director of One Above from India, expects that the number of Indian tourists to Đà Nẵng would reach 3 million in the next two years, with new direct air routes launched between Đà Nẵng and New Delhi.

The complex of Furama resort Đà Nẵng-Ariyana was awarded with World luxury Awards 2023 in categories of the Best Luxury Beach resort in ASEAN, while Don Cipriani’s restaurant was awarded as the Best Luxury Heritage restaurant in Asia.

HCM CITY — A collection of photos and memorabilia of Vietnamese soldiers and people during the resistance war is displayed at the HCM City War Remnants Museum.

The exhibition titled “Kỷ Vật Thời Kháng Chiến” (Remembrances of Resistance Days) features 177 photos, documents, and memorabilia belonging to Vietnamese leaders, soldiers and journalists such as water bottles, lighters, hammocks, document bags, and radios.

The exhibits also include medical instruments and tools of military medical corps, and props from art troupes.

Letters sent by people on the frontline and prisoners to their loved ones and families are showcased as well.

Trần Xuân Thảo, director of the museum, said: “The exhibition helps both local and foreign visitors understand Vietnamese patriotism, bravery, humanistic traditions, and love of peace during the war and today.”

He added, “It is a chance to educate young generations about the nation’s patriotic tradition and heroic and indomitable spirit, and national construction and defence.”

Sharing his thoughts on the exhibition, Alan Sedgley, a British visitor, told Việt Nam News that “I was born in 1949, some of these conflicts were on the television screens in ones’ youth. … gradually as the 1960s went on you appreciated more and more that this was a horrendously awful conflict, with terrible things happening. So it’s right that this place is here to remind people of what happened, and it has ongoing significance on the status of the world.”

The exhibition will run to the end of March. The museum is at 28 Võ Văn Tần Street in District 3. — VNS
