HÀ NỘI — The 2022 Hà Nội Basketball Championship (HBC) will tip-off on September 21 with 12 clubs competing for the men’s and women’s trophies.

It will be the first-ever semi-pro basketball tournament, themed ‘Beyond the Game’, in Việt Nam with more than VNĐ150 million (US$6,300) up for grabs.

The HBC 2022 is co-organised by the Việt Nam Basketball Federation, Việt Nam Cable Television (VTVcab), and New Sports Company.

Four women’s teams will compete in a round-robin format to find out the winner at the Thanh Trì Gymnasium.

Meanwhile, eight men’s squads will be divided into two groups and take part in a round-robin competition; the two strongest ones of each group will advance to the next stage.

The men’s teams include Hidden Dragons, The Zoo, Dwarf, Scorpius, Ba Đình, and Hà Nội Team.

There will have at least two matches organised every day from 6pm. The final is scheduled for October 2. All matches are free for supporters.

To increase the quality of the tournament, each club is allowed to register an unlimited number of overseas Vietnamese players and two foreigners who are living and working in Việt Nam. However, only one foreigner is allowed to play on the court.

For the first time, dancers of the Street Dance Việt Nam television show will be invited to cheer up the game.

Those who cannot come to support and join the dances in person can watch live on VTVcab platforms such as ON Sports channel, ON and ON Sports TV apps, ON Sports facebook, and Youtube ON Bóng rổ.

“Although it is our first time, we expect the tournament will be an annual event not only in Hà Nội but also in other cities and provinces,” said Tô Duy, head of the organising board.

“We have invited the best and long-time clubs in the city to compete for a huge bonus. We want to commercialise the event to push clubs to become pro ones.

“We also plan to add entertainment activities through the competition so hip hop dance and dancers from the Street Dance Việt Nam are invited to make HBC more attractive,” he said.

Organisers believe this decision will help local amateur players sharpen their technique and skills and learn from their pro colleagues. Scouts of the Việt Nam Basketball Association teams will also be seeking out talents to improve their line-up for the coming seasons.

The organisers also hope that HBC 2022 will promote the basketball movement in the city and Việt Nam in general, and encourage fitness and exercise in Việt Nam.

The success of the first championship will be a strong push for organisers to carry out events in other localities and to further the national championship, and the bonus will be bigger in the next season.  VNS

Ten Hag admits he was warned off ‘impossible’ Man Utd job

Published

on

LONDON — Erik ten Hag said he was warned off taking on the “impossible job” of Manchester United manager but admitted he could not resist the challenge at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman, who left Ajax to take over at United in 2022, ended the club’s six-year trophy drought last season but has been under intense pressure in his second campaign.

United beat Chelsea 2-1 at home on Wednesday, easing the pressure on their beleaguered boss, but have lost 10 out of their 22 games this season in all competitions.

Ten Hag told fanzine “United We Stand” that he was advised how tough it would be to revive the fortunes of the 20-time English champions, who have been in the shadow of Manchester City for a decade.

“Everyone was telling me ‘You can’t succeed in that job’,” said the 53-year-old. “They said it was impossible. Me? I wanted the challenge.”

United beat Newcastle in the League Cup final in February and finished third in the Premier League in 2022/23.

But this season they are already out of the League Cup, trail Premier League leaders Arsenal by nine points and face an embarrassing group-stage exit from the Champions League.

Since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, six managers have tried and failed to take United back to the top of English football — David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

“I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but it was such a great club with such a great fanbase,” said Ten Hag.

“People love Man Utd, or they are against Man Utd. I like clubs like this. Ajax was like this.”

The Dutchman said earlier this week he was confident that he retains the backing of the United players after reports of rifts within the dressing room.

United are expected to announce that British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe is buying a 25 percent stake in the club in the coming days but the deal may not make a major impact on spending in the January transfer window.

“I don’t think we will spend a lot,” said Ten Hag.

“As a club, you have to look for improvements, so if you can find better and it’s realistic financially and with financial fair play, the club has to go with it.

“But most of the time you don’t attract the best players in the winter.”

As per the schedule, the UEFA Euro 2024 is set to kick off in Germany on June 14, 2024, featuring the opening match between the German hosts and Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

The tournament’s culmination is scheduled for July 14, with the final match taking place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Twenty teams have already qualified for the finals, alongside hosts Germany.

The remaining three spots will be determined in the play-offs slated for March next year.

On Sunday morning, UEFA conducted a draw to group the teams for the final round.
