Hanoi: The 300-year-old house built in one night

Published

on

Son Dong village in Hoai Duc district, Hanoi is famous for making statues and worshiping objects. This land is also known for an old house that was built within one night.

The house was created in 1676 and after 300 years, it is still nearly like the original.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Vy, 79, and his family live in this house. He said that the house belonged to a senior mandarin of the Le Dynasty, minister Nguyen Viet Thu (1644-1692).

Vy is the 11th descendant of the family who is assigned to look after the house. The history of the old house is not recorded in books, but for many generations, people in Son Dong village have talked about the house origin via word of mouth.

In 1675, under King Le Hy Tong’s reign, Admiral Nguyen Cong Trieu used court elephants to pull construction materials to build temples and roads for the people. Unfortunately, the elephant became exhausted and died. According to the old law, the admiral had to return by a gold-made elephant of similar weight or be subject to the death penalty.

The Admiral could not afford to make that golden elephant. The mandarin who was assigned to judge the case was minister Nguyen Viet Thu, who tried to defend the Admiral. Thanks to the minister’s effort, the admiral was removed from all guilt. The admiral wanted to do something to give thanks to the minister. However, all gifts were refused by the minister. Finally, the admiral decided to build a house as a gift for the minister as his house was too old.

It was difficult to refuse, so the minister offered a condition: If the admiral could build the house in just one night, he would receive it. And the admiral satisfied that condition: building a house of five compartments, 18.5m length and 7.2m width, within one night in 1676.

The house was overhauled twice in 1975 and 1995. Vy sai the house is not only the pride of the family but also of Son Dong villagers.

The midfielder will arrive in HCM City next week and quarantine for 14 days before joining the club.

The 39-year-old Matsui played professionally in Japan, France, Russia, Poland and Bulgaria. He played for Yokohama FC in the J.League for the last three years.

The midfielder played all four matches of the Japanese team’s run to the round of 16 in the 2010 World Cup.

While Matsui brings obvious pedigree to Sai Gon, he will be the oldest player in the V.League 1 when the season begins.

Matsui will also become the third player in the V.League 1 to have competed in the World Cup.

Denilson Oliveira of Brazil played for Hải Phòng in 2009, seven years after being part of the 2002 World Cup-winning team managed by Luiz Felipe Scolari. Nastja Ceh competed in the same World Cup for Slovenia and played for Thanh Hóa in 2013.

Alongside Matsui, Sài Gòn have in 12 new players and have seven more on trial after saying farewell to many of the players that led them to a third-place finish last season, including star forward Geovane Magno.

“We are stronger than last season. Currently, the players have been practising vigorously to prepare for the new season, starting on January 16, 2021,” said Vũ Tiến Thành, coach and chairman of Sài Gòn FC.

“Last season, my club only dared to set a target of the top eight but next season we aim to reach the top three,” said Thành. — VNS

Quang Ninh golfer Do Hong Giang won the FLC Vietnam Masters on Friday.

Giang led the championship from the start, scoring -5 after 54 holes. On the last day, he made 73 strokes, scored three birdies and four bogeys. With the round nearly over, he maintained a safe distance from runner-up Truong Chi Quan.

Quan only scored +5 after three rounds, 10 strokes less than the leader. However, in the last round, the HCMC golfer performed well, achieving seven birdies to shrink the distance between him (-2) and Giang (-5). Needing only four more strokes to make a comeback, he failed to maintain his momentum, losing a point to allow Giang his first VPGA Tour title after going pro less than six months ago.

Quan finished second with a score of -1, as did South Korean golfer Kim Woo-jin. Another South Korean, Park Song-ho, finished third (+1) and Nguyen Huu Thang fourth (+2).

With the title, Giang also won a prize of VND180 million.

Of the 10 amateur golfers who participated in the event, only Vo Gia Thong, who scored +9 and peaked at ninth, made it into the top 10.

Endorsed by Vietnam Professional Golf Association, FLC Vietnam Masters 2020 took place from December 1 to 4 at FLC Golf Links Sam Son in the central Thanh Hoa Province with the participation of 89 golfers, competing for a total prize of VND1 billion ($43,080).
