Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Thi Tam lost 0-5 to world defending champion Nikhat Zareen of India in the light flyweight final match of the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi on Sunday evening, bringing home a silver medal.

Before the match, Zareen was considered the great hope for the host to secure the championship title.

She was the defending champion in the 52kg class before moving down to the 50kg weight category.

The first round saw Zareen, who received great cheers from home spectators, launch many quality right-handed punches toward Tam.

The host boxer received five 10-point markings from judges, while the visiting fighter got five 9-point markings, losing the round.

In the next two rounds, Tam maintained her attacking tactic, but it made no difference.

Meanwhile, Zareen proved to be an experienced fighter when she kept distance and maintained a moderate attacking tempo, securing a 5-0 win in the end.

The Indian boxer won a gold medal and a bonus of US$100,000 while Tam bagged a silver medal and $50,000.

Despite her loss, Tam has made history as the first Vietnamese boxer to reach the final of a world boxing tournament.

The Vietnamese fighter will fly home to prepare for the 2023 Southeast Asian Games, to be held in Cambodia in May, and the delayed 2022 Asian Games, scheduled to take place in China in September.

Her goal is to win a ticket to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris from July 26 to August 11 next year.

HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Thị Tâm has ensured at least a bronze medal from the IBA Women’s Boxing Championship, which is being held in New Delhi, India.

The Vietnamese athlete beat No. 3 seed Laura Fuertes Fernandez, last year’s bronze medalist, 5-0 to advance to the semi-finals of the women’s light flyweight category.

A slot in the semi-finals means that Tâm will earn at least a bronze, the second of Việt Nam from the world championship.

The first one went to Nguyễn Thị Hương in the light heavy class in 2019. Hương, however, was ousted from the first round this year.

Tâm will receive US$25,000 for her third-place finish.

Her bonus will be doubled if she defeats Lkhadiri Wassila of France in the next round. Wassila, who won a bronze at the European championship in 2014 and 2019, defeated No. 7 Cheddar Rabab of Morocco in the other quarter-final match.

She earlier shocked officials and audience by beating No. 2 seed Tsukimi Namiki of Japan in the first round.

The other semi-final match will see Nikhat Zareen of India and Ingrit Lorena Valencia Victoria from Colombia.

Giant killer Zareen won over Raksat Chiuthamat of Thailand on March 22. Earlier, she beat No. 1 Roumaysa Boualam of Algeria.

Meanwhile, No. 5 Valencia Victoria defeated No. 4 Sorrentino Giordana of Italy in the quarter-finals. VNS

HÀ NỘI — Viettel ended Hồng Lĩnh Hà Tĩnh’s trophy dream by beating them 4-2 to take the National U17 Football Championship title on March 21 in Hưng Yên Province.

Entering the final, Viettel was one of title favourites and the best centre of youth football training. Meanwhile, Hà Tĩnh was the most impressive team of the tournament. They were a substitute team but beat powerful rivals including reigning champion and host PVF to advance to the gold-medal match.

However, Viettel needed only eight minutes to take the lead against Hà Tĩnh.

In an attempt to protect their goal, a Hà Tĩnh player touched the ball with his hand in the penalty box, and the referee immediately pointed to the spot.

Striker Nguyễn Công Phương made no mistake to open the scoring with a strong straight finish to beat goalie Trọng Dương.

Eight minutes to the interval, it was 2-0 for Viettel from a set piece.

Phương sent a perfect ball to the box and Thanh Bình jumped high to head it in.

The second half saw more outstanding performance from Viettel as Hoàng Khanh and Hồng Kiên scored easy goals at the 58th and 61st minutes, respectively.

Striker Nguyễn Công Phương of Viettel (left) tries to pass a defender of Hồng Lĩnh Hà Tĩnh in the final match. Viettel win 4-2.

Hà Tĩnh focused on aggressive attacks, but when those attacks stalled, they could not resist Viettel’s counter-attacks. Khanh and Kiên were not watched by any Hà Tĩnh defenders in the box and their close range taps found the back of the net to make it 4-0.

Hà Tĩnh’s strong effort bore fruit at the 64th with a straight low finish of Hoàng Phú. Three minutes to the end, Đức Quang converted a penalty into a goal for Hà Tĩnh and 4-2 was the final score.

“Words are not enough to describe my feeling at present, I am happy, my players make me really happy,” coach Nguyễn Văn Biển told reporters. “I believed that we would win the match but could not think that we would score four goals in the final.”

“We watch videos of Hà Tĩnh’s matches and analysed their strong and weak points. We mapped out plans to reduce their power while bringing into play our strong points. And we did it,” he said.

Winning the title, Viettel bagged VNĐ100 million (US$4,200) while Hà Tĩnh took VNĐ80 million.

Viettel scored two goals in each half of the final match to earn an award of VNĐ100 million for the champions.

Viettel’s Phương, captain of the national U16 squad, was voted most valuable player of the tournament. He also shared the top scorer award with Nguyễn Trọng Tuấn of Sông Lam Nghệ An, with four goals each.
