Money does grow on trees: Marketplace where leaves replace cash a big hit in southern Vietnam
The Leaf Market – a fair where guests and visitors used tree leaves in lieu of cash – took place in Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam on Wednesday, attracting over 1,000 visitors.
This year’s leaf market was hosted by the People’s Committee, the Women’s Union, and the Youth Union in Phu Binh Ward, Long Khanh City, Dong Nai Province and featured 23 booths selling 33 kinds of food, drinks, and goods.
Visitors to the marketplace were given three leaves each which they could exchange for products.
By the end of the day, most booths had sold out of their products, leaving only happy vendors with handfuls of leaves.

“The market was interesting and special because it was so unique. Dishes were free but clean and tasty,” said local resident Tran Thi Thong Nhat.
“I hope similar markets will be held in the future.”
The vendors who participated in the market did so simply because they enjoyed sharing their food and drinks with others.
“I brought 600 servings of banh troi nuoc [sweet rice ball soup] and banh it [sticky rice dumplings] even though I knew I’d be paid in leaves instead of cash,” said Giang, a vendor.
“If the event is held again next year, I will definitely participate and prepare more food.”

According to Nguyen Thi Le Huyen, chairwoman of the Phu Binh Women’s Union, the ward held the event on the occasion of International Women’s Day (March 8) to create a playground for all residents, particularly women.

The sky over Binh Thuan Province in south-central Vietnam was lit up by spectacular fireworks and colorful drone lights on Saturday night as the opening ceremony of the National Tourism Year 2023 themed ‘Binh Thuan-Green Convergence’ was held on Phan Thiet City’s beach.
The National Tourism Year 2023 will feature over 200 events, with 13 of them to be organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and other ministries.
Among them, Binh Thuan Province will host more than 30 cultural, tourism and sports events, while rolling out 164 other events with the participation of 41 centrally-administered cites and provinces throughout the year.

According to the organizer, last year saw Vietnam’s tourism as a highlight of the country’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery efforts, with an upsurge in the number of domestic tourists.
Tourism is meant to become one of the nation’s spearhead economic sectors.
The National Tourism Year, which is a typical annual event, is aimed at stimulating the growth of tourism and driving up the post-pandemic recovery.
Via the event, Vietnam can popularize cultural features, tourism potential, and tourist products among local and international visitors.

A series of activities in the National Tourism Year 2023 in Binh Thuan Province reflect a bright expectation of the tourism industry, including efforts in promoting and introducing tourism and turning the industry into a spearhead economic sector in Vietnam in general and Binh Thuan in particular.
Binh Thuan Province is endowed with a long coastline of 192 kilometers, Phu Quy Island, natural tourism resources, and stunning landscapes, while the province is home to the Mui Ne national tourism area.
These factors make the province capable of developing various types and products of tourism such as leisure tourism, sightseeing, adventure tourism, sea-based tourism, eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and religious tourism.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang said that the important event is a response to the message sent from the third national conference on tourism chaired by the prime minister.
Over the past few years, together with socioeconomic growth, the tourism industry has made great strides and become a key sector, said the deputy prime minister.
Vietnam’s tourism really becomes a spotlight on the global tourism map, winning multiple global awards, he affirmed.
With the theme ‘Binh Thuan-Green Convergence,’ the country’s tourism is moving toward a sustainable and green sector, Quang added.

Among the foreign participants were over 260 expats in different localities of Vietnam, alongside more than 100 athletes from 16 countries.
Through the event, the organizing board will donate VND700 million (US$29,700) to the fund for the poor in District 1.

As of early 2023, Ho Chi Minh City had nearly 32,000 eateries, restaurants, and street food establishments, according to the municipal Department of Tourism.
District 1 has more than 1,300 business establishments providing services that are considered core activities of the nighttime economy.

Apart from kraits, redtail pit vipers and copperheads, a four-meter-long king cobra weighing nearly 17 kilograms at Dong Tam 2 Snake Farm in Phu Quoc City in Vietnam’s Kien Giang Province is luring crowds of tourists.
Visiting the snake farm in Suoi Da Hamlet in Duong Ta Commune, Phu Quoc City, Nguyen Thi Thu Duong, a tourist coming from Hanoi, said that she was surprised at the king cobra’s length and large size.
“The king cobra is so big. It is necessary to take care of the snake carefully to attract many visitors, especially those who desire to learn about the rare snake,” said Dung.
Nguyen Tan Loc, an employee at the snake farm, said that the farm is conserving and nourishing seven types of snakes, including four venomous species such as krait, redtail pit viper, copperhead and king cobra.

The farm expects to show residents on Phu Quoc Island which snakes are poisonous and instruct them how to protect themselves from a snake.
The king cobra was brought from Dong Tam 1 Snake Farm in Tien Giang Province to Phu Quoc to serve tourists and learners, according to Loc.
“We preserve and look after these snakes, apart from offering tourism products, to give a chance to tourists to know which snakes still exist on the island.
“The farm welcomes some 40,000 domestic and international tourists each year,” he said.
