Tearful son completes VnExpress Marathon in final tribute to mother

A man cried throughout his 21 km VnExpress Marathon Quy Nhon run Sunday, told at the very start that his ailing mother had passed.

Vo Dinh Hoa, 54, had planned the run as a final gift for his mother. He finished the race in one hour, 41 minutes and eight seconds, ranking in the top 10 for people over 40 in the segment. His tears did not stop at the finish line.

Hoa had hardly slept in the days leading to the tournament. His mother had suffered a stroke, lost her ability to hear and see, and was paralyzed for many years. When her illness worsened last week, Hoa was by her side all the time. He decided to attend the VnExpress Marathon Quy Nhon that he registered for earlier, to bring back a medal as a final gift for his mother.

“I had been with my mother for a whole week, I was well aware of the situation. Now, it is too late to give this medal to her,” Hoa said.

The 54-year-old runner was not lonely, though, on his 21 km tribute. His tears moved many runners who encouraged him and shared his grief. The hugs shared by fellow runners commiserating with Hoa was perhaps the most touching image of this year’s event.

Hoa said giving this gift to his mother was his only motivation. He had never run a marathon before. He had run often with friends to raise funds for charity, that was it. But those who know him would not be surprised by his finishing the race and the time that he did it in.

In pain, but composed, the grieving son took a bus back to Gia Lai Province, just minutes after finishing his run.

Da Nang museums attracting domestic visitors with free entry policy

Published

Due to COVID-19, museums around the country have welcomed substantially fewer visitors.

Da Nang, however, has introduced a policy of free entry to museums during all of 2021, which has encouraged a number of domestic travellers to visit the central coastal city and improved the local tourism sector.

After a period of not welcoming any visitors due to the pandemic and then widespread flooding, the Cham Museum in Da Nang has hosted many domestic travellers keen to learn more about the Champa people’s architectural marvels.

The Cham Museum is not alone in posting an increase in visitors, with other museums in the city also welcoming more people due at least in part to the free entry policy introduced by local authorities for all of this year.

Museums around Da Nang welcomed an average of 1,000 to 1,500 visitors during the first week of the new year. While entry is free, services and programs remain top quality.

Museums around Da Nang are considered valuable in helping people discover and explore the local land and people. With the free entry policy, visitors from all walks of life can understand more about the central city./. VNA

HÀ NỘI – The Thailand-based Grand Sport Group and the Việt Nam Football Federation on Monday introduced the new jerseys for the national football team in Hà Nội.

There are two uniforms, one red and one white for competitions and green for goalkeepers, with light blue for other activities, for teams including the men’s and women’s national squads. This year the VFF’s long-term partner will also provide jerseys for junior sides from U16 to U23.

Grand Sport uses modern technology in producing light, breathable and sweat-absorbent jerseys to aid players in training and competing.

Speaking at the ceremony, VFF General Secretary Lê Hoài Anh said Grand Sport’s sponsorship since 2015 has played a big role in the national teams’ performance. He believed the new uniform would help players be more comfortable and confident ahead of important competitions in 2021.

Grand Sport representative Trần Thành Trung said the group hopes Vietnamese teams perform well in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, AFF Cup and the SEA Games. —

According to the Thailand-based Grand Sport, the new uniforms feature a large red star in an echo effect design at the centre, which represents the resilience and unity of the Vietnamese people, the players, and the millions of football fans around the country.

The jerseys are made from high-quality, light, and moisture-absorbing fabric using advanced technology, the company said.

Speaking at the unveiling, VFF Secretary General Le Hoai Anh said the partnership between the VFF and Grand Sport will open the best conditions possible for Vietnamese national players during both training and competition, particularly at a time they are preparing for major matches this year and beyond.

He expects that all national football teams will play better and post the best results.

This is the sixth year Grand Sport has cooperated with the VFF to introduce new uniforms.

The group inked a sponsorship deal with the VFF in 2019 to provide sportswear and training gear for the national men and women’s football teams, along with the U16, U19, and fulsal teams. The deal is in place until 2023./.VNA
